Asheer Akram is an emerging Kansas City artist whose recent move and renovation of Buie Brass Works has informed and culminated in his current body of work entitled, Blood, Sweat, Tears, & Trade.  His work is rooted in aesthetics, examining the appeal of both the beautiful and the repulsive, basing these examinations in the context of time, space, and the constant traffic of commerce.

Buie Brass Works is the name of a foundry in Kansas City which operated on 18th and Charlotte for a large part of the twentieth century.  Charlotte Street housed several other businesses which bartered goods and services between themselves and together formed a community dialogue.  To this day that dialogue exists, but its community has changed. The buildings no longer house businesses. They house artists.

The Buie represents a young but thriving art community composed of like minded individuals whose diverse talents and labor are bartered and traded much like the Businesses which these artists replaced.

The Buie opens its doors to the public Saturday, April 26th for a night of Art, Food, and Drink.  Click for map.
